What is vermicompost?
Get to know vermicompost: what earthworms help create, how it differs from potting mix, and what to look for before buying.

Small creatures. Useful work.
Vermicompost is the material produced when earthworms and microorganisms break down organic matter. Gardeners use the finished material as a soil amendment. Its composition depends on the starting materials and the way it is processed.
An amendment, not a whole growing medium
Think of vermicompost as one ingredient in your plant’s growing environment. A pot also needs a suitable growing medium, drainage, water and light. A bag of vermicompost and a bag of ready potting mix serve different purposes.
Look beyond the label
Before choosing a product, look for the pack weight, ingredients or feedstock information, usage directions and storage guidance. Specific nutrient values and certification claims should be supported by documentation from the seller.
Start with your space
A smaller pack is easier to store when you have a few pots. A larger pack can make sense when you have more containers to maintain. Compare the price per kilogram as well as the total price.
